Creature Animation Directing & Supervision for Primitive War

Bringing complex creatures to life — on time, on quality, and on vision.

Project Overview

  • Title: Primitive War

  • Genre: Military sci-fi creature feature

  • Animation Scope: 500+ shots, 20+ unique dinosaur species

  • Team: Fully remote, rotating international crew of ca. 40 animators

  • Release: Theatrical and digital

The Challenge

  • No coordination like you see on big budget films

  • Tight indie budget and deadline pressure

  • High animator turnover during production

  • Quality benchmark: Jurassic Park / Prehistoric Planet

My Role

Initially hired as a part-time Senior Animator, I was promoted within 3 months to take on dual responsibilities as:

  • Animation Director – Led creative vision, ensured style consistency, directed animators while following the director's vision

  • Animation Supervisor – Oversaw shot quality, technical standards, and rigging leadership

Key Contributions:

  • Directed creature animation across ca.500 shots

  • Supervised lead of the rigging department

  • Delivered notes, feedback, and performance direction remotely

  • Animated a few key shots

  • Built and ran a lightweight remote workflow across continents

The Outcome

  • Delivered final animation on time and on budget

  • Visual standard comparable to major studio productions

  • Maintained continuity despite shifting team members

  • Demonstrated impact of strong direction within a tiny budget
